This time, alarm bells sounded about the “Smart TV Remote” and “Halloween Coloring” applications, as the first application was downloaded from the Google Play store at least 1,000 times. Highlighting these dangerous Android apps, Tatiana Shishkova, an Android malware analyst at Kaspersky, said the apps are being used to spread the notorious “Joker” malware.

The “Joker” was first seen in 2019, and has become a favorite choice for cyber crooks trying to deceive unsuspecting Android users.

The dangerous “Trojan horse” is designed to be extremely difficult for Google’s security systems to detect, and is also capable of enrolling victims in expensive subscription plans.

These plans can end up costing Android users hundreds of pounds each month unless they discover something is wrong and end up canceling the bogus subscriptions they didn’t even sign up for.

Earlier this week, Shishkova named and shamed these apps on Twitter.

The apps have since been removed from the Google Play Store, but if you downloaded software before that, you’ll need to remove the apps from your device.

The latest warning comes as Shishkova has, in the past few weeks, highlighted a group of Android apps on the Google Play store, which are also loaded with Joker.

Now, these apps have been pulled from the Google Play Store. But if you miss these alerts, here are the apps you need to be wary of:

• Now QRcode Scan.

• EmojiOne Keyboard.

• Battery Charging Animations Battery Wallpaper.

• Dazzling Keyboard.

• Volume Booster Louder Sound Equalizer.

• Super Hero-Effect.

• Classic Emoji Keyboard.

As always, one of the best ways to protect yourself from malware threats is to use apps only from trusted developers, and avoid makers of unknown apps and downloads with minimal reviews.

You can also subscribe to an antivirus service to get an extra layer of protection for your devices.
